What counts as an emergency

Dental emergencies we see quickly

A dental emergency is any event that causes aching pain, bleeding or injury to your teeth or gums. Here is what each one can look like and what to do until you are seen.

01

Severe toothache

Ongoing or throbbing pain is a sign something is wrong with the tooth or the nerve inside it.

Signs to look for
  • Pain that does not go away or wakes you at night
  • Pain when you bite, chew or touch the tooth
  • Sharp sensitivity to hot or cold

Until you see us: Rinse with warm water and gently floss. Do not put aspirin on your gums.

02

Chipped or cracked tooth

A crack can let bacteria reach the inside of the tooth, so it should be checked even if it does not hurt much.

Signs to look for
  • A rough or sharp edge you can feel with your tongue
  • Pain or a zing when you bite down
  • A visible chip, crack or missing piece

Until you see us: Collect any pieces, rinse with warm water and use a cold pack to reduce swelling.

03

Knocked-out tooth

Time matters. The sooner you are seen, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

Signs to look for
  • A whole tooth knocked out or pushed out of position
  • A loose tooth after a fall or hit to the face
  • Bleeding from the socket

Until you see us: Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. If you can, place it back gently, or keep it in a cup of milk.

04

Lost filling or crown

Without its filling or crown, the tooth is exposed and can become painful or break further.

Signs to look for
  • A crown that has come off or feels loose
  • A new hole or rough spot where a filling was
  • Sensitivity when eating or drinking

Until you see us: Cover the area with dental wax or sugar-free gum until you can see a dentist.

05

Swelling or abscess

Swelling around a tooth can be a sign of infection, and infections can spread, so treat it as urgent.

Signs to look for
  • A swollen gum, cheek or jaw
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum
  • A bad taste, bad breath or a fever

Until you see us: Rinse with salt water for comfort, but seek urgent dental care.

06

Gum injury or bleeding

Cuts, tears or bleeding that will not stop need to be looked at to prevent infection and further damage.

Signs to look for
  • Bleeding that continues after pressing on it
  • A cut or tear in the gum or inside the lip
  • Painful, swollen or sore gums

Until you see us: Rinse gently with warm water and press clean gauze on the area.

Get emergency medical help right away if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling that spreads toward your eye or neck, or a fever with severe swelling.
